About The Opportunity

Job Purpose

Maintain a comprehensive Environmental Management System to include compliance with all applicable federal, state and local environmental regulations. Provide technical leadership in the design,development and implementation of environmental processes and programs in support of GKN Aerospace Services. Support manufacturing and facility operations with essential environmental, health and safety functions and participate in establishing business strategies.

Principal Accountabilities

* Ensures compliance with all applicable environmental regulations including, but not limited to air quality, water quality, wastewater discharges, NPDES permits, hazardous waste management, and hazardous materials management and emergency response to hazardous material spills.

* Conducts preliminary permit determinations of all new equipment or process modifications. Evaluate all new processes for applicability with specific air quality standards including MACT, NSPS and NSR. Complete and file air construction permits with MDNR and obtain necessary air operating permits.

* Ensures Title V compliance through periodic audits and oversight. Performs all required recordkeeping and reporting including semi-annual compliance certifications, exceedance reports, and annual emission inventory (EIQ). Preparation of Title V permits/revisions/renewals.

* Completes and submits all required water quality permit applications, self-monitoring wastewater and storm water reports to MSD and MDNR. Coordinates sampling and analysis of wastewater and storm water discharge.

* Maintain and analyze all required monitoring data, including continuous emissions monitoring systems data, chemical consumption data and operating data for relevant MACT and NSPS standards. Complete and submit required MACT and NSPS compliance certifications.

* Completes and submits EPCRA SARA 313 and 311/312 toxic release inventories.

* Maintain waste programs; analyze waste streams and waste generation for applicability with RCRA. Evaluate treatment and disposal options and technologies. Complete and submit all required generator reporting requirements.

* Perform required training for environmental compliance, hazardous waste training, and coordinate emergency response training. Maintain Spill Control and Countermeasure Plan.

* Maintain existing 14001 certification, conduct internal audits, coordinate with external parties/registrars for periodic surveillance audits.

* Provide regularly scheduled status of compliance reviews to upper management. Prepare reports, studies and recommendations for improvement to facility compliance programs.

* Evaluate workplace/employee and environmental exposures to hazardous and physical agents by using technical knowledge and monitoring equipment.

* Assess current GKN EHS program and practices and develop compliance solutions and best practices for high priority deficiencies.

* Respond to EHS emergency situations and develop/improve hazardous materials response capability.

* Provide support to the Metals, Composites, and Facilities’ Environmental Safety Action Teams.

* Support GKN-STL culture shift toward full integration of ESH into business unit ownership. Support and enhance the values contributing to a positive GKN business environment.

* Through inspections and audits, assure the maintenance of accurate records and permits required by local, state and Federal regulations relative to environment, health or safety.

* Maintain required Shared Service Agreements (e.g., Wastewater).

* Coordinate, supervise and assure regulatory compliance by contracted environmental service suppliers.

* Provide advice and consultation for production and facilities on environmental, health and safety issues.

* Revise/maintain policies and procedures to support processes for all regulatory requirements.

* Develop and provide key training programs for GKN employees.

* Serve as point of contact for regulatory inspection, insurance visits, and external audits. Respond to regulatory agencies, auditors, etc. on complex subject matter.

* Maintain a working knowledge of applicable safety, industrial hygiene and environmental regulations through professional associations, technical and government agency publications, workshops and seminars. Expand expertise to provide assistance for environmental or safety programs and issues. Participate in cross-location & cross-division initiatives.


BS inEnvironmental Engineering or related discipline required. Graduate level degree preferred.

Experience and Qualifications

* Five to eight years of environmental engineering in a manufacturing environment required.

* Must have minimum of 4 years experience in air quality permitting/regulations that include Title V permitting, NESHAP, NSPS & NSR standards.

* Proven ability to interact with a variety of professions and disciplines in a facilitation role. Good oral and written presentation skills with demonstrated leadership capabilities. Strong computer skills needed.

* Highly competent in performing engineering/emission calculations and have hands on experience with EPA reporting programs and web applications (TRI-MEweb (CDX), webFire,AP-42, etc.),

* CEMS data acquisition software, MDNR Emissions Inventory System MOEIS and Microsoft Office applications.

* General knowledge of HAZWOPER, Lead and Asbestos regulations.

* Working competence with federal, state and local regulations.
